Recognition of Prior Learning

Have you gained valuable skills through work experience but don't have formal recognition? RPL is a way to have the skills you already have assessed and recognised.

Experience countsSkills gained at work, on the job and in the community can be assessed.
Evidence basedYou show what you can do with documents and practical evidence.
Close the gapsTraining can focus on what is still missing, not what you already know.
What is RPL?

Turn what you know into recognised skills

RPL assesses the knowledge and skills you have gained through work experience, on-the-job training and other informal learning against the requirements of a programme.

If you meet those requirements, your learning can be formally recognised. If there are gaps, you can be guided on exactly what is still needed, so you do not repeat learning you have already mastered.

RPL can help you to

  • Get formal recognition for skills you already use every day.
  • Avoid repeating training you do not need.
  • Improve your job prospects and your chances of progression.
  • Move towards a full programme with a clear plan.

Questions

RPL questions answered

What does RPL mean?
RPL stands for Recognition of Prior Learning. It is a process that assesses what you already know and can do, from work and life experience, against the requirements of a programme.
Do I need a qualification to apply for RPL?
No. RPL is designed for people whose skills come from experience. You will need to show evidence of that experience, such as records, references and examples of your work.
How long does RPL take?
It depends on the programme and how quickly you can provide your evidence. We will give you an idea of the timeframe when you make your enquiry.
What does RPL cost?
Costs depend on the programme and your situation. Contact us for a quote and to ask whether any funding applies.
What if I do not meet every requirement?
You will be told which parts are missing, and training can then focus on those parts instead of the full programme.
Can my employer arrange RPL for our staff?
Yes, please get in touch and tell us about your team. You can also read more on our For Business page.
